WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Flu shots are crucial this year, especially with COVID-19 still looming. The physicians at Palos Verdes Medical Group recommend that most people ages 6 months and older receive a flu shot. If you are unsure as to whether you should receive a flu shot, please speak with your PVMG provider. Flu shots are available during your regularly scheduled PVMG appointment or on Wednesdays and Saturdays (October 16th, 20th, 23rd, 27th, 30th and November 3rd, 6th, 10th and 13th) with an appointment.

Each year, the flu vaccine is updated to reflect the flu strains that are expected to be the most prevalent. This year’s flu vaccine is designed to protect you against four different strains of flu. This does not necessarily mean you won’t get the flu, however it is your best defense for protecting yourself against it.

It is recommended that you are vaccinated for the flu by the end of October. It is important to remember that in regards to the flu vaccine, it’s better late than never!

For those who are 65 years and older, it is recommended that you receive a high-dose flu vaccine. According to the CDC, these are “designed to create a stronger immune response in people 65 years and older.” If you are 65 years and older and don’t have access to the high-dose flu vaccine, a regular flu vaccine is better than nothing.

You are able to get your COVID-19 vaccine (dose #1, #2 or #3) and the flu shot at the same time however if you have COVID-19 or are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, you will need to defer getting your flu shot. PVMG has both the flu shot and Pfizer COVID vaccine and can arrange for you to get both at the same time if you prefer.

There are many similar symptoms between the flu and COVID-19. The only way to know which you have is to be tested for both. PVMG can test you for both COVID-19 and the flu. Click here for more information on the signs, symptoms and similarities of the flu and COVID-19.
